
Oil is important for two main reasons. It is the raw material for many useful products - plastics, fertilisers, medicines, etc - and it is also a valuable fuel for transport. In some cases, it is vital. Aviation fuel (kerosine) cannot be obtained from any other source.
So far, the discovery of fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - has more than kept pace with demand.
But they will run out one day, though it is difficult to five a precise date for this to happen. If current reserves are divided by current annual production a rough forecast can be made of how long the fossil fuels will last.
