More for your money?
| We are all customers of the oil and gas industry. Its products - from plastics to petrol - so dominate modern life that it's impossible not to be. The oil and gas industry therefore has an important role in educating us in efficient usage and safe disposal of oil and gas products. For example, turning your heating thermostat down a degree or two or switching to unleaded petrol is not only beneficial to the environment, but also saves you money. The relationship between the oil and gas industry and the environment is an issue for us all - regardless of career aspirations. | ![]() |
How do we fix it?
Even when all possible care is taken, accidents do happen. No matter what the cause, whether an oil tanker has had an accident and is leaking oil, or gas is lost because a pipe has been damaged, spillages have to be cleaned up. The oil and gas industry invests a great deal of time, effort and money in finding pollution as soon as it happens - then eliminating it. Spotter planes patrol areas of intense activity, while research departments work hard at developing products that will neutralise the effects of pollution immediately. Research is even being carried out into single-celled organisms that 'eat' pollutants, thus converting them into harmless substances.
