The diversity of its careers

Site surveying in NorwayThere are also thousands of 'support' careers. The oil and gas industry is a complex business which needs managers, retailers, accountants and marketing professionals to make it efficient and profitable. Again the training provided in these areas is extensive. As for engineering, scientific and technical staff, the industry develops skills that not only help it to run more smoothly, but also promote employment prospects!

Oil and gas is an industry for the future. Thanks to modern technology reserves of oil that can be economically extracted are actually increasing. For example, reserves of natural gas are being found in the North Sea faster than they are being used up - so there's plenty of time for you to develop a successful career!

Edward Jones (22) is a marketing officer with AMEC Processing. He studied marketing at university.

My degree focused on fast-moving consumer goods - supermarkets and product marketing rather than heavy industry. Now the product that I'm marketing is different, but the principles involved are very similar. Marketing has become a lot more important to oil and gas companies over the last ten years or so. They have to be able to understand their customer in a market which is changing faster than ever before.

I chose to go into oil and gas because it sounded like an exciting, progressive industry. It's one of the UK's biggest, and the international factor also interested me. It seemed like the challenge that I'd been looking for.

There's been a lot of learning on the job. I've also been involved in several different departments which has given me a really good overview. I'm actually based at the construction site, so I get to see the engineering aspect first hand, which is useful. I also get to visit our design house about once a week.

I work on the international aspect of the industry, looking for future clients for my company. I'm involved in a lot of meetings with them, so communication skills are essential. The potential is huge because the UK has a world-class industry. We're market leaders because of our North Sea experience - which we can use in other areas. There are always new markets for our technology and expertise - and I'm helping to find them.
