BP Amoco in the United Kingdom
Coryton refinery is one link in the worldwide operations
of BP Amoco. BP Amoco operates two refineries in the UK: at Coryton in
Essex and at Grangemouth in Scotland (see fig. 3). They also operate two
major petrochemical plants, in Hull and Grangemouth, and have over 1000
service stations selling petrol, lubricants and convenience goods directly
to the public. The company headquarters is in central London with other
large office complexes in Sunbury-on-Thames and in Aberdeen. In total,
BP Amoco employs 35,760 people in the UK.
Worldwide Operations
BP Amoco is a multi-national company with
operations in over 70 countries. It has 96,650 employees worldwide. Of
these, 42,526 are employed in the USA, 35,760 in the UK and 18,364 in
the rest of the world. The company is owner or part owner of 22 oil refineries
around the world (see fig. 21). Of these, 14 are wholly owned by the company
and eight are jointly owned. BP Amoco’s business incorporates everything
from oil exploration and production through refining and petrochemicals
to selling petrol at service stations. The huge scale of operations is
illustrated by the following facts. BP
Amoco:

is producing oil in 18 countries;

produces 1.9 million barrels of crude oil per day;

produces 160,000 million cubic metres of natural
gas per day;

owns or operates 38,000 kilometres of pipelines;

produces 23 million tonnes of chemical products
a year;

has 15,500 service stations in the USA
alone and 11,500 in the rest of the world.
